Former Wisconsin Governor and U.S. Senator
Gaylord Nelson searched for many years to find a way to focus public attention on the environment.
After talking to other lawmakers and to then President John F. Kennedy, they set out inform the public about these concerns in 1963 with a nationwide conservation tour.
Although informative, that wasn’t enough for
Nelson, who was born in
Clear Lake, Wisconsin on June 4, 1916. So, in 1969, he decided there should be a special day to teach everyone about the things that needed changing in our environment. Senator
Nelson got his colleagues to agree, and on April 22, 1970, the first
Earth Day was born. People nationwide and worldwide are reminded on this day to be conscientious of the environment and to help preserve the planet.
