Otis Redding has a Wisconsin connection, but it’s one all of us would rather he not have. That’s because, unfortunately, he died in our state in December of 1967. A memorial to the soul singer is located in the Rooftop Garden of the
Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace. In the winter of 1967,
Redding's plane crashed into
Lake Monona -- near where the Monona Terrace is today.
Redding was about to perform in concert in
Madison, Wisconsin. In early 1968,
Redding's recording of "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" hit the top of the pop and R&B charts. The song for which
Redding is most known, was recorded just three days before his death. You can hear this great song
Dock of the Bay at his website.
